I live on a farm, with chickens, cows, tractors, and all the typical farm stuff. I've lived there my whole life. My house is 110 years old, and I'm pretty sure our farm is a little older than that. In fact, I found a license plate in the attic last year still inside an envelope addressed to one of my great, great grandparents. The plate was from 1913.
Our farm got bigger in the 1960s and 1970s. My Grandfather purchased neighboring farms. It's still classified as a small farm though. We have about a thousand acres we farm. We grow corn, beans, wheat, and hay most of the time. There are wooded areas on our farm, which is good for me (since I'm a bit of a tree hugger). Unfortunately, there's some poison ivy as well. We also have pasture land for the cows.
We don't have many chickens. Maybe 20. It's nice having fresh eggs from chickens that get to run around and raise hell on our farm. Sometimes the roosters attack me. I laugh about it. We have quite a few cows. About 140 at last count. They are dairy cows, for milk. Not raised for beef. They are all like pets, and even though most of them have numbers, they usually have names as well. I have 6 cows. Cookie, Little Cookie, Cutie, Cookie # 3 (or Cookie 3.0 optimized), Cocoa, and Tank. Tank is short and wide, like a tank. They're my babies.
We have 2 bulls (boy cows). One of the bulls ran my sister through wall last summer. She broke all her ribs, lacerated her spleen, cracked 2 vertebrae, and punctured both lungs. She actually ended up here at OSU medical center. They took good care of her. She's back to 100% health. Sometimes bulls play rough.
I have lots of farm stories, but it's time for work.
Anyways, I love the beach too, but the farm is where I'm from and where I still live. It will always be my home. I'm getting a place on campus in the fall, but I'm still keeping my house in the country. You can't always crank super loud music, shoot guns, or light off fireworks in town. Unless you were on campus last weekend of course. Sometimes its okay if you don't mind getting maced.
I live out in a farming area, and I'm afraid I don't share the sentiment of loving the area. The only thing I like about farming areas is the high number of people who have horses, because I like horses.
ReplyDeleteI live on a farm as well. I agree with you, I like living out in the country. I mean it would be nice to live close to my friends in the city, but your right, you cant let of fireworks in the city.
