This was a relatively short, simple article my Tom Junod that ponders the importance of honor and Chivalry. It talks about gang violence, and how much of it revolves around men and their "ownership" of women. If a woman is disrespected in any way by another male, whoever is with that woman is made to feel like they themselves have been disrespected. When fights occur in gang environments such as those that exist in parts of Los Angeles, men don't typically fight with swords (like the dual in Firefly : "Shindig"), they instead use guns. The fights don't last very long. As mentioned, nobody wants to be the one who brings a knife to a gunfight. Though this article focuses more on gang violence, it shows a modern form of Archaic Chivalry that goes back thousands of years. The men probably have no idea what the word "Chivalry" even means, but they do indeed practice a form of it.

I think it's very interesting that gang members might not even understand the meaning of chivalry, yet they practice it by 'defending the honor' of their girlfriend.
ReplyDeleteI like how you point out that gang violence can be compared throughout the past with much similarity. Even though the gangs of the modern times don't know they are acting similarly.
ReplyDeleteIt's both to defend their girlfriends honor, and protect their own, as they feel "dissed". It's amazing how the behavior holds true over the generations, and through different races or ethnic groups.
