The main topics discussed in the article are metaphors. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (BtVS) is one of many television shows and movies which use metaphors as substituites for real life issues.
The main example used for this article is high school. "High school is Hell" is an excellent metaphor. Not just because there are monsters from the television show to deal with. As the article describes, not having a date to prom, parent teacher conferences, being made fun of in class, and not getting a spot on the cheerleading team are just as bad if not worse possibilites for teenagers. The actual line between which is worse, high school life, or the monsters they face is often times blurred.
The first seasons of BtVS looks at metaphors regarding identity and perception of a teenager moving to a new school and developing friendships. The second season of the show revolves around metaphors concerning love gone wrong, and dysfunctional relationships. The main idea being the person you fall in love with isn't exactly who you thought they were. The third season involves graduation being the "end of the world".
