It's revealed while delivering cattle that Kaylee does indeed have feelings for Dr. Simon as she discusses getting plate as a gift for him in a market with Inara. Dr. Simon shows up frustrated about River and their situation, then starts cursing Serenity and the captain while in the market. This insults and hurts Kaylee.
There is an altercation during the cattle negotiations, and the Shepard is shot and hurt badly. Dr. Simon is kidnapped during the altercation, and later River is kidnapped by the same people.
Kaylee and other members of the crew grapple with the fact that captain Mal left Dr. Simon and River behind after they were kidnapped. After the kidnapping, Dr. Simon and River are taken to a village where there previously was no Doctor.
In the meantime, the Shepard is treated by the Alliance. Initially they refused to treat him, but once his identification was scanned, the Alliance captain said to take him to the infirmary. It is unknown what kind of status the Shepard has, but the audience is left to wonder.
River is accused of being a witch in the village because she can read the minds of others. Just as the villagers are about to burn River at the stake, Firefly shows back up to rescue her and Dr. Simon.
This was more of an adventure episode and didn't contain much in terms of subject matter for my APR.
