Blog # 24 bridge between scene and real world

I’m comparing the chivalry in Firefly : “Shindig” to situations involving current day gang violence.
They’re very comparable.  They only difference in terms of the physical dynamics of it are that guns are typically used in street gangs as opposed to the swords that were used in “Shindig”.   It’s very common for a woman to be insulted, or “dissed” by another man.  If the woman happens to live in a semi-archaic gang environment, in a certain part of Los Angeles California, this may lead to a conflict between males.  If the female is in relationship with a male different than the one who insulted her, the relationship male will probably be told of the insult spewed by the first male.  This will inevitably lead to some sort of confrontational conflict.  Often times, this conflict will not involve a simple verbal conversation.  They don’t typically argue with swords in current day Los Angeles either.  Many people in these gang environments do have guns however.  This is sometimes a way for men to have their “duels” in the current world.
